Safety training key to store’s success

Elders Goulburn, winner of this month’s Agsafe Achiever Award, counts Agsafe training as an essential part of their operations.

Hub and Branch Manager Ted Goad says chemical sales account for a large portion of sales at his rural merchandise business and making sure his staff are prepared to deal with the risks is very important.

“Agsafe provides us with a set of guidelines to follow that ensures safe working practices and storage of the many different chemicals that a rural supplies store is required to stock,” he said.

Since the store is located in a livestock grazing area, staff assist primary producers to increase on-farm productivity through simple and achievable advice about animal health products, pasture establishment and renovation.

Mr Goad heads the local team of farm supply consultants including sales manager Neil Piper, Lauren Kennedy, Kim Storey and agronomist Daniel Lewis.

Mr Goad encourages his staff to keep their Agsafe accreditation current and up-to-date to show they have completed industry-relevant training.

“Agsafe training has certainly made all of our staff aware of the requirements and responsibilities associated with the safe use and storage of chemicals, as well as covering transport requirements and manual handling.”

Agsafe Facilitator George Kinniburgh said Mr Goad was meticulous with his safety compliance.

“Elders staff assigned to assist with completion of the Agsafe premises checklist are always well prepared and devote their full attention to the items in the checklist on the day,” said Mr Kinniburgh.

“The store is always spotless with excellent displays and helpful, friendly staff,” he said. “Their presentation is second to none.”

Elders Goulburn has continually evolved and updated their procedures to ensure that the highest safety standards are maintained.

When the branch relocated to the present shed in Goulburn, Mr Goad sought technical advice from Mr Kinniburgh to ensure the building was compliant with relevant codes of practice at the time.

Mr Goad said, “We strive to be ever vigilant in handling and storing chemicals correctly to minimise the risk of accident or injury.”

“Elders is a company that prides itself on providing the best possible service to clients. The Agsafe Achiever Award recognises how the Goulburn branch staff have amply demonstrated that this is a priority to them.”

Agsafe would like to acknowledge and congratulate long-time employee Kim Storey for her dedication, support and implementation of Agsafe policies in Yass and Goulburn.
