Committed to safe work practices

Oasis Turf, winner of this month’s Agsafe Achiever Award, counts Agsafe training and support as a major influence on their attitude towards safety.

Oasis Turf is an independent distributor of specialty products to the turf and amenity markets including golf clubs, bowling clubs, race courses, local government, schools, commercial contractors and turf farms.

Co-directors and owners Rick Henley and Peter Harrington believe Agsafe has helped them to improve the store immensely.

“The training and advice that Agsafe provides is vital in making sure that we comply with industry best practice when it comes to OH&S, working conditions for staff and customers, and the safe transport of goods,” said Mr Henley.

“If you follow the guidelines you will be operating in a lawful manner which reduces your risk of injury to staff, customers and the public. This is important in day-to-day operations at Oasis Turf.”

Established in 1997 in Braeside, Melbourne, the business has expanded to become the largest supplier of turf specialty products in Victoria.

Oasis Turf has also developed strong alliance partnerships with many overseas and Australian manufacturers of turf products such as Growth Products, Mitchell Products, KALO, Wilbur Ellis, Ferti Technologies, Lebanon Turf, Syngenta, Bayer, Nufarm and SST Australia.

With the growth of the business, the nine person team relocated in 2013 to a larger premise in Carrum Downs, Melbourne.

Mr Henley considers Agsafe facilitator John Fennell a significant factor in the store’s ability to achieve Agsafe Advanced status.

“Safe work practices are important in our industry. Without Agsafe accreditation and the advice from John, we may not be operating in a safe way or adhering to best practice,” he said.

“Before we moved into our new premises, we contacted John to advise him of our new location and ask what was required to get our premises Agsafe accredited. This was important as we needed his input to make sure that the set-up of our warehouse was going to be in accordance with Agsafe standards and guidelines.”

Mr Fennell said, “Everyone at Oasis Turf is proactive in safety matters. Customers are aware that all staff follow the correct procedures.”

Both Mr Henley and Mr Harrington have been in the turf industry for over 30 years. In addition, all three territory managers are qualified former assistant or golf course superintendents who have been in the trade for over 20 years. The combined experience and technical knowledge of all staff ensures that the agronomic advice that customers receive is both extensive and highly beneficial.

Mr Harrington said, “Proper store management of all stock is an absolute priority. This begins with our stock levels and the safe stacking and warehousing of stock, through to best practices in safe and prompt distribution.”
